Antonio's dive - time for TV replays
He's one of our most honest players, so I was disappointed to see him resort to a dive and for us to win the match that way. He also went down rather too easily for the penalty against Burnley.
It's very difficult for a referee to make a snap decision, especially when the corollary of not calling a foul is to book the player concerned for simulation. It may be that Antonio's previous good character won him those 2 penalties, but now refs will start to view his tumbles with suspicion.
The answer is so obvious that only the fatheads in the FA could ignore it: simulation should be an offence, and TV replays should be available. That would enable a ref to blow the whistle immediately, including when he didn't think that a player had been fouled, and to ask for the 4th official to review the TV evidence. It would stop much of the diving that goes on and would reward the honest players, which I think Antonio is at heart.

Pretty soft and it barely makes up for the countless clear cut penalties we have had turned down this season and especially last.

Accept it and move on.

Re: Antonio's dive - time for TV replays
The problem is if the player doesn't go down he doesn't get a penalty.

You know it's also cheating by the defender if he manhandles the attacker.

Obvious dives should be punished but this wasn't one of those.

Re: Antonio's dive - time for TV replays
Referees need to take the approach that if the player goes down 'theatrically' (as Antonio did) then just play on, even if it looks like there may have been a foul.

That will soon stop the play acting.

I hate diving, but there's a fine line between diving and being 'professional' when necessary. For me Antonio stayed the correct side of this line.

Have to be honest I went nuts when Wardy took a dive against Ipswich back in 86.

While I agree with your general swipe at football turning into a pathetic girly wrist slapping event, ours certainly was a penalty and if it had been the other way I'd have said it was maybe a bit soft but probably more annoyed at the defender for being so clumsy and allowing it to happen.

Re: Antonio's dive - time for TV replays
Never a penalty, I'd be fuming if it was the other way. Football is getting worse with all the diving and screaming when barely touched. Take vardys sending off, the player was never hurt. But he knows if he makes the most of it by rolling about and screaming it can sway a weak ref.

The rondon inciden whent the manc who takes the slap amazingly doesn't go to ground instead Jones the big tart goes screaming to the ref like a complete nonce, basically demanding to send player off.

Football needs to get back its machismo. The days when footballers took a dig without screaming.just get back to honest physical football.

Bit like Zlatans challenge yesterday. He took a couple back after, everybody's happy.

Sorry Canning - I've looked again and Huddlestone's foot made no contact with Antonio. You seem to be the only person to think it did.

Re: Antonio's dive - time for TV replays
Still cannot believe anyone thought he dived it was not the hands that brought him him down it was Huddleston foot taking him down. Have a look again disbelievers. Ref was correct

Re: Antonio's dive - time for TV replays
He was fouled
If he didn't go down it wouldn't have been given
Lets get referees to do their jobs right first

That said I am in favour of tv replays. Mainly because it would take away some of the big team bias.
Not watching the game but bbc reckons Sissoko should have got a straight red.
Doesn't and a minute later he sets up the goal that puts Spurs in front.

Re: Antonio's dive - time for TV replays
All the posts which say that it doesn't matter, because we have had enough bad decisions made against us when players dive, miss the point I am making. If there were TV replays which judged whether there was a foul serious enough to award a free kick or penalty, and if not, whether there was simulation deserving punishment, both our players and opposition players would not dive at the first opportunity.

The problem isn't what Lee Mason gave yesterday, but what he would give again under the same circumstances or what other referees would and wouldn't give.

I think that was a penalty yesterday too, but I bet most of the other referees wouldn't have given it.

Then again, Rojo got a yellow for a two footed, studs up challenge against CP, and yesterday Zlatan got a yellow for a clear red card yesterday. Inconsistency everywhere.

Re: Antonio's dive - time for TV replays
I don't think it was a penalty although I thought it was nailed on at the time. Jordan's boy put his hand on Antonio which is allowed, there was no pull or grab though, and if you actually turn your hand round like he did, you'd have to be the Incredible Hulk to exert enough pressure to put Antonio off balance.
